SPYRES AT SUBURBIA

Fresh from their recent tour with  Canadian rockers Softcult,  Spyres are gearing up for the release of their debut EP with the effervescent new single “Lost Without You”. It’s their most relatable release yet.

Flexing their songwriting prowess, Spyres have succinctly summed up a crucial part of adolescence on “Lost Without You” -  when your best friend gets a new partner and the dynamic shifts, leaving both friends to navigate their new paths separately for the duration of that relationship. This is where the delicate harmonies of Emily Downie and Kiera McGuire pack a huge punch as sparkling guitar lines bring about a sense of nostalgia and optimism. Speaking on the new single, Spyres explain:  “this friendship will last a lifetime, probably much longer than the relationship that has caused this disruption. All the friend feeling left behind wants is for their friend to recognise that fact before they get caught up”. Who hasn’t been in this situation before?

Featuring the earlier singles “See Through You” and “Honestly”, debut EP “Dear Diary” is an emotion-fuelled time capsule that charts the thoughts and feelings of the four members since their formation. Recorded by co-producers double Platinum certified producer Christopher Marshall (Gerry Cinnamon, Declan Welsh & The Decadent West, Dead Pony) and Johnny Madden ( of Baby Strange), this record sees Spyres step into their own. Speaking about “Dear Diary”, Spyres said: This EP is really special to us. It has some of our best new songs on it and some familiar favourites from over the years. ‘Dear Diary’ captures all the angsty teenage feelings and drama that we all experience through life’s course. As we started the band when we were only 15/16 a lot of the songs on the EP have relevance to what it was like for us to basically grow up in the band together. we have had the time reflect and write the songs to our younger selves. The EP rounds up our teenage years as we are moving into our twenties and going through new life experiences.”

Inking their first recording deal with prolific independent label LAB Records (CRAWLERS, Vistas, Des Rocs) earlier this year, Keira McGuire said “Signing to LAB has really been so exciting! It’s something we’ve dreamed about since we began playing around 4/5 years ago so for this to be coming to life, it’s starting to feel much more real for us and we feel really lucky to have been given this opportunity so early on.

It’s great to be on the same label as other artists we have listened to for a number of years such as Abbie Ozard and Hockey Dad. We met Abbie a few years ago while on tour with Lauran Hibberd and we loved watching her sets every night. We also saw Hockey Dad a couple of years ago in Glasgow supporting Courtney Barnett so it really feels full circle now being signed to the same label as these acts we have loved for such a long time.”

Mark Orr of LAB Records said “We have been long time admirers of Spyres on record - and finally seeing them at Live at Leeds in October just served to underline our belief that they’re one of the most exciting young bands around. They’ve achieved a great amount for a band with only 3 songs in the world - so we’re excited for everyone to hear the new music.”

“Dear Diary” is set for release on Friday 12th August 2022.

MORE INFORMATION
Under guiding lights of the famed Glasgow venue, The Barrowlands Ballroom, at a charity event following the Clutha helicopter disaster in 2016, Keira McGuire and Emily Downie met and subsequently matched their acoustic dexterity and soaring vocals as a young teenage duet which saw them gig in Scotland, and beyond in Liverpool and Exeter soon after. Their masterful covers of ‘Psycho Killer’ and ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ continued to impress and in late 2018, the duo began their experimentation with songwriting, drawing influence from Courtney Barnett, Wolf Alice, Fontaines D.C. as well their post-punk practice material. Developing their voice past their acoustic roots, Keira and Emily found their very own bassist and drummer in Jude Curran and Alex White in February 2019.

Since their official formation in April 2019, Spyres have racked up over a million streams on Spotify alone with break-out singles “Otherside”, “Fake ID” and “I Don’t Care”, all receiving an incredible outpouring of radio support from the likes of BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders, BBC Radio 1’s Annie Mac, Radio X’s John Kennedy, BBC Introducing Scotland’s Phoebe I-H and Vic Galloway. The reaction to the new band has been mirrored in press with fevered endorsements from DORK, Gigwise, The Scottish Sun, Daily Record, Tenement TV, Punktastic and Distorted Sound at a glance.

Making a name for themselves on stage, Spyres supporting credentials include The Jesus And Mary Chain, Nothing But Thieves (BRITs Week x War Child Shows), The Snuts,  Lauren Hibberd to name a few.  In spite of the pandemic, Spyres made serious ground in the live space in their own right. Their headline show at Glasgow’s King Tuts on the Summer Nights programme sold-out in less than 24 hours of the onsale date, and months later, the band sold-out London’s Old Blue Last, Glasgow’s Stereo and Edinburgh’s Mash House. In addition to this, Spyres made their debut at a number of major festivals in 2021; TRNSMT, Neighbourhood, Live At Leeds, including a headline slot on the This Feeling stage at Isle Of Wight Festival.
